Society as the main promoter of inequality
Currently, our society has been greatly influenced by the capitalist economic system. This factor has increased inequality because it lets see the great gap that exists between poor people and rich people. In Colombia, it is commonly seen that the state and the government always try to discriminate those people who do not belong to a privileged class.
Frist at all, it is worth mention that in Colombia the discrimination against poor people do not only comes from the government, as society is one of the main promoters of discrimination based on sex, race and social class. In Colombia, all people are greatly influenced by media, as we can see how media, and the society in general, classified as a risk poor people and only attributed to that select group of people many violent behaviors and criminal attitudes.
The critical theorist Henry A. Giroux make a reflection about this fact in his book “the stolen innocence”. He claims that the government categorizes children as innocent, but only when they belong to privileged classes. Proclaim protection at all costs for minors, but when a minor of low resources commits a crime, he must be punished as an adult.
In the education field, poor people are also discriminate as the government increasingly tries to take away access to education, promotion the private education. What we have to do to decrease that gap between poor and rich people is to offer a good public educative system, based on critical pedagogy, taking into account that the main objective of critical pedagogy is to decrease inequality in society and to promote critical thinking and reflection.
