intercultural communication essay

Society as the main promoter of inequality   Currently, our society has been greatly influenced by the capitalist economic system. This factor has increased inequality because it lets see the great gap that exists between poor people and rich people. In Colombia, it is commonly seen that the state and the government always try to discriminate those people who do not belong to a privileged class.  Frist at all, it is worth mention that in Colombia the discrimination against poor people do not only comes from the government, as society is one of the main promoters of discrimination based on sex, race and social class. In Colombia, all people are greatly influenced by media, as we can see how media, and the society in general, classified as a risk poor people and only attributed to that select group of people many violent behaviors and criminal attitudes.  The critical theorist Henry A. ICTS ARE NEW ERA MATERIALS THAT HELP STUDENTS TO INCREASE THEIR EXPOSURE TO THE TARGET LANGUAGE. SHOULD TEACHERS START USING COMPUTERS INSTEAD OF ENGLISH BOOKS IN CLASSROOM? The 20th century brought to society important advances in many areas, one of them is the field of technology. The technology was initially created with the purpose of facilitating and improving communication processes between people, but it is only in recent years that the important role it plays in the educational field has been recognized. Most of these technologies were not designed expressly for educational applications, so it took time, money and experimentation to establish how and where they could be most effectively applied (Rogers, 1995). Nevertheless, nowadays ICTs are still cataloged by some institutions as an obstacle to teach, without taking into account that today's teachers must receive new technologies as their allies in the learning process since these enrich students learning. Using tec...

Critical Theory and Educational Practice

How do you think Frankfurt School thoughts can be applied to today in our own culture? Frankfurt thoughts can be applied today in our culture by encouraging students to construct their own knowledge, it could be doing new research studies and implementing an education that is contextualized. It means an education that is not removed from reality and can respond to social issues. We have to start moving away from the passive role of students and from that education which believes that students have to be a container that has to be full of theories, to be builders of knowledge in order to encourage a social transformation. That theory could be a utopia, but at the same time could be possible if teachers encourage the student to do research and to reflect on what they are learning.

Michael Sandel: What Money Can't Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets

1.How does Michael Sandel support the thesis that "over the past three decades we have drifted from having a market economy to becoming a market society? He supports that thesis making an example about education, because in the field of education nowadays society wants to buy motivation and knowledge in students, and those are things that do should not have a price. We have a market society because society not only wants to buy products, but also values. 2. What sorts of arguments are offered for and against the assumed proposal of paying young children two dollars for every book they read ? arguments for say that students start reading because they are getting money, but time after it will become a habit and students will read for themselves. arguments against say that when you start reading because someone is paying you, you will not love it because you do not have the real desire to read for yourself, so you will read for love of money and not because you love read...

Stephen Brookfield on Creative & Critical Thinking

Stephen think that it is always good if you can teach something when you have experienced it. He starts being interested in the teaching and learning process when he realize how important is feedback from instructor. For Stephen critical thinking is the process by which we become aware of the assumptions that frames the way we think about everything in our life, but also the way we act. The only reason you do critical thinking is to prepare you to take more informed actions. The creative thinking is being able to view ideas and practices from multiple viewpoints. the person who is creative can move outside of his habitual typical mental framework, he can also generate interpretations, perspectives ans responses that are different from the general ways of thinking. this person is also able to communicate that though through a variety of modalities and forms, either visual, symbolic, etc. A critical and creative informed action meets the next conditions: 1. one based o...

Barriers to critical thinking

misunderstanding what is meant by criticism : having a clear idea of what means being critical and constructing my insights to be a critical student. Lack of practice:  try to take advantage of every time I have to test my knowledge in real situations.  insufficient focus and attention to detail: being focus on the exact task and details to develop my critical thinking.

Reflection about Bodner´s theory

Do you recognize anything of yourself in Bodner´s description of students? what effect would the approach he suggests have on your learning and understanding? in my personal experience I think that I can feel identified with Bodner´s description of students, because I think that students should not be only focused in theory, we also have to apply that theory to real situations being critical. In this way we have to ask ourselves and to learn by our personal experience, for instance, when I have had to deal with students in a classroom I feel that I do not have enough capacity even though I study a degree, because it is not the same to study about "classroom management" that face a classroom with 30 students. We only can learn how to manage a classroom by experience. In this way the approach that Bodner suggests could have a good effect in my process  of learning, because I will have to be critical about real situations.

Challenging opinions

For me, the things I find most difficult about challenging the opinions of other people are : to convince people about my point of view, because sometime I do not have enough arguments to support my opinions and  in some cases I do not know how to express my feelings in a clear way.  I deal with this being accurate when I have to talk about something with anybody.

Influences on my thinking

For me, influences on my thinking that I need to be most aware of so they don´t prejudice my thinking are:   my religion is something that always influences my mind because in any decision that I take I have in mind to God, but in any case, it does not influence my thinking in a wrong way because I have a clear idea of what I am and what I want.  I will deal with this being conscious that I have to accept the different beliefs that exist noways.

Emotional self-management

For me the emotions that are most difficult to manage when others disagree with me are: antipathy, because sometimes when they do not think in the same way I do, they try to annoy me with their opinions in a way that they should not do. I deal with this being tolerant of other opinion´s people because I know that I have to accept when I do not have the reason, and when somebody else tries to annoy me with arguments that I know is wrong, I just give them the reason no matter why I think, because I do not like to argue with others.
